I was having trouble sleeping. Maybe it was something I ate, or it could have been the multitude of thoughts circling in my head from a full life. Whatever the case, I wanted to sleep so I decided to focus on what I’m grateful for. Reflections on my wonderful husband quickly led to the business we run together and tasks we needed to accomplish soon. Shaking off the details of the day, next came speculation of our upcoming grandchild’s future. The pesky nudge of reality pointed me to baby shower plans and day-care logistics. My attempts at relaxing by concentrating on gratitude in the realities of my life fell short.
So, I decided to focus on creation. Moving away from my world expanded my thoughts to an immense plain, untethered by time or space. This stretch was beyond names, objects, or emotions. As if entering a mythical world, my mind began to settle.
My awareness focused on the body. What an impressive creation it is. It’s made of muscles, bones, veins and arteries. It can jump and stretch, hug and rest. The body can heal itself and endure tremendous trauma. It is complicated and magnificent. The body has amplitude as Olympic athletes show us just how far and fast it can go. The body is pure and strong. I saw the image of a body floating in space. It appeared as a well-crafted sketch, slowly spinning around to show all of its grandeur.
A similar image of a brain appeared alongside the body. There were lines stretching out in all directions to represent its enormous expanse. What a sophisticated and still mysterious organ. As it floated against a starry background, circling around to show its full potential, I was awe-struck by all that was possible in the brain. People have tested the features of their brain memorizing hundreds of names or thousands of dates. This vulnerable organ, surrounded by the thick bone named skull, holds the power to innovate, direct, influence, and create.
Then, to complete this brilliant picture, the spirit showed itself as a beating heart. Again, the image circled around, showing its majesty. The expanse of its reach seemed limitless. There was no restriction its ability to hope. This created potential and a faith in the unseen that brought it strength and courage. This container allowed gratitude to cover all the pains and sorrows of the world. There was no ceiling on its ability to love. It could reach to the ends of the universe and still not be depleted.
I was breathless in the degree of creativity and potential wrapped up in these three images. I began to have sweet, happy dreams. There were no restrictions on any possibility. It was all there, wrapped up in the creation of human beings. My heart sang and my stomach filled with butterflies. A smile was comfortably impressed on my face and soul.
This new perspective showed me beauty everywhere. Not only was nature striking, man-made objects took on a new attraction as ideas and modifications illustrated inspirations of the mind. Light poles and grain bins took on the same beauty as a bird in flight as I began to appreciate the refinement of ideas and solutions. And the scope of human relations burst into the same elegance as a rose opening reveal its charm.
The agitation that had not allowed my body to rest had been replaced by the majesty of the limitless capacity of creation. Being in this place brought peace, tranquility, excitement, and awe. This magical dream was reality in its finest form and promised to take me on an extraordinary journey whenever I decided to focus on the endless promise both in and around me.
